Love Story
How we met...
{this is such an embarrassing picture - but its our first one together, straight out of the '04 summer scrap book. i promise my hair was not as gothic black as it looks}
David and I are headed to Chattanooga this weekend. This dear little city holds a special place in our hearts – it’s where we met (for the most part). In the summer of 2004 we both signed on to be counselors at Camp Vesper Point. I remember exactly where I was sitting when I saw David for the first time. I remember what he was wearing -- a Larry Bird Celtics shirt. My very first thought when I saw him – “hmmm, I’m intrigued. I think we could be best friends.” Honest to goodness, that is the very first thing I thought upon laying eyes on my husband.
When we actually met and exchanged words, the same feeling remained. However, after two years of college under my belt that consisted of dating quote unquote losers, I had taken a vow to take a break from college boys (all boys for that matter). I tried to ignore David. And if that didn’t work, I at least tried to ignore my feelings for him.
Our first date was “on accident.” During camp we weren’t allowed to have our cell phones so we all reverted back to the ancient custom of sending letters by U.S. postal service. I had been writing back and forth with my best friend, Courtney, trying to schedule a time for me to drive down to Birmingham during on of my “two fours,” aka twenty four hours off. I received a letter on Thursday (not even joking it was half eaten by her dog – no lie!) that said “that sounds perfect, I’ll see you this weekend. Call me when you get close.”
Did I mention that David was from Birmingham? Well I of course was not at all orchestrating this whole drive to birmingham just to spend extra time with him by carpooling….no (sarcastic) way. About 45 minutes outside b-ham I give Courtney a call. She was at the beach – not in Birmingham! She had not expected me to receive her letter so early in the week and had intended for me to come the following weekend instead. But we were too close to Birmingham and too far from Chattanooga to turn back.
And thus, not knowing anyone else in Birmingham, our first (24 hour) date began…
But that is another story for another blog post….
